We did a trip up to Big Sur last weekend to do some hiking and basking in the scenery. We stopped at the elephant seal rookery outside San Simeon. It was amazing! There were thousands of elephant seals! They spend a few months at that beach for giving birth, mating, and weaning their pups.
The male elephant seals spar for rights to breed with the females. They have to protect their harem (yep, that's what it's really called) as new males arrive throughout the season. They bite each other on their necks and it gets bloody!
We did a bunch of hiking in local state parks. This is a waterfall that flows into the ocean.
Our yurt!! The resort was called Treebones, and it was really neat. The yurt was very nice, with shared bathrooms in the lodge. There were two restaurants at the resort and free breakfast in the morning.
The yurt village, perched above Hwy 1, with an ocean view. There were 12 yurts total.
They are "off the grid" and grow most of their food and make their own power. Guests are welcome to walk around the property. These worms were in the garden.
There was also a human-sized nest on the property. You can rent it to stay in it for the night. It's completely made of sticks, with a futon mattress inside.
